Molecular Genetics Laboratory
The Molecular Genetics Laboratory analyses genetic changes in blood and tumour tissue to support cancer diagnosis and personalised treatment. It provides diagnostic testing for departments throughout the oncology centre.
Conditions and clinical questions addressed
Testing helps identify tumour-associated genetic changes and mutations relevant to treatment selection. BRCA1 and BRCA2 testing addresses hereditary predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer. Other investigations assess high-risk HPV and selected viral and urogenital infections.
Clinical approach
The laboratory uses conventional and real-time PCR, Sanger sequencing, and next-generation sequencing. Molecular findings support diagnostic decisions and the selection of personalised treatment strategies.
What patients can expect
Depending on the requested investigation, testing may involve blood or tumour tissue. Results may provide information about tumour mutations, inherited cancer susceptibility, or an infection. For cancer care, molecular findings can help the treating team identify relevant targeted treatment options.
