Clear rules help the hospital run safely and make the experience better for all patients, families, and staff. Please read these guidelines before your admission or visit.
General conduct
All patients, visitors, and accompanying persons are asked to treat staff, other patients, and anyone else in the hospital with respect. Behaviour that is abusive, threatening, or disruptive will not be tolerated and may result in security involvement or suspension of non-emergency services.
Identification
You may be asked to show an identity document at any point during your visit or stay. Please keep it accessible.
Ward routine
The ward has a daily schedule covering meal times, rest periods, ward rounds, and nursing checks. Please avoid unnecessary noise during rest and night hours. Follow the guidance of nursing staff regarding movement within the ward.
Visiting guidelines
Visiting hours and the maximum number of visitors permitted in a room at one time are set by the department. This protects patients who may be immunocompromised or recovering from procedures. Children visiting the ward must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Visitors who feel unwell should not enter clinical areas.
Infection prevention
Hand hygiene is the single most important step in preventing infection. Please clean your hands with soap or the available hand sanitiser before entering and after leaving ward areas. Follow any additional precautions indicated on room or bay signs. Do not share personal items such as towels or crockery with other patients.
Mobile phones and electronics
Mobile phones may be used in most areas of the hospital but must be kept on silent or vibrate mode. Please be considerate of other patients when making calls. Switch devices to silent or airplane mode if instructed to do so in specific areas (for example near certain medical equipment).
Smoking and alcohol
Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is not permitted anywhere on the hospital premises. Alcohol is not permitted on the wards.
Food and drink
Food brought from outside should be suitable for the patient and should not be shared with other patients without permission from nursing staff, as some patients have dietary restrictions. Certain investigations or procedures require fasting; the nursing team will advise when this applies.
Personal belongings
The hospital takes reasonable care but cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to valuables or personal items. Keep jewellery, large sums of money, and other valuables at home where possible. If you need to keep something valuable with you, ask staff about safe-keeping options.
Medications
Do not take any medicines — including supplements or vitamins — that are not part of your current prescribed plan without telling your nurse or doctor first. Bring your complete medicines list to every appointment and on admission.
Privacy and dignity
Your privacy and dignity are respected at all times. Procedures and conversations are conducted in a manner that protects your personal information and body privacy. If at any point you feel this is not happening, raise it with the nursing team or the patient relations department.
Emergencies on the ward
If your condition changes suddenly, use the nurse call system or alert the nearest member of staff immediately. Do not wait for a scheduled review if you feel your situation is urgent.
