Overview
Radiotherapy uses precisely targeted radiation to treat tumours while sparing surrounding healthy tissue as much as possible. It may be used on its own or together with surgery and drug therapy, depending on the treatment plan.
How treatment works
Radiotherapy is carefully planned before it begins. Planning usually involves imaging to define the treatment area, after which the team prepares an individual plan. Treatment is then delivered over a series of scheduled sessions. Each session is typically short, and you go home the same day in most outpatient cases.
What to expect
The team explains the number of sessions, how often they take place, and possible side effects, which depend on the area being treated. You are reviewed during the course of treatment so that any side effects can be managed, and follow-up is arranged afterwards.
Preparation
You will receive specific instructions for the planning session and for treatment, including any positioning or skin-care guidance. Follow them and raise any questions with the team. Bring an identity document, referral, and previous imaging or results.
How to access radiotherapy
Radiotherapy is arranged by the treating team as part of your plan. Confirm planning, scheduling, and pricing through reception.
