Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of cancer care. Diagnostic services help confirm whether a disease is present, define its type, and establish its extent (staging) so that the treating team can recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Diagnostic work in oncology typically combines several methods:

• Imaging studies to locate and measure disease
• Laboratory tests, including blood analyses and tumour markers where relevant
• Tissue sampling (biopsy) and pathology examination to confirm the diagnosis
• Specialist review and, where needed, staging investigations

The specific tests depend on your symptoms, referral, and previous results. After the investigations are complete, a specialist explains the findings and how they inform the next steps. In many cases results are discussed by a multidisciplinary team before a treatment plan is proposed.

Preparation depends on the test. Some imaging or laboratory studies require fasting or specific instructions; others require none. You will be told what to do when your appointment is scheduled. Bring an identity document, referral, and any prior imaging or test results so the team can compare and avoid repeating tests unnecessarily.
