Ocular Oncology
The Ocular Oncology Department provides diagnosis and surgical treatment for tumours of the eyelids, eyeball, and orbit. Its services also include local delivery of anticancer medicines for intraocular tumours.
What the department does
The department performs eyelid and conjunctival surgery, orbital tumour removal, and reconstructive procedures. More extensive operations include enucleation, evisceration, and orbital exenteration. Other treatments include intravitreal chemotherapy, selective intra-arterial chemotherapy, laser coagulation, and transpupillary thermotherapy.
Conditions and clinical questions addressed
The department assesses and treats tumours involving the eyelid skin and soft tissues, conjunctiva, internal structures of the eye, and orbital tissues. Fundus imaging supports examination of the back of the eye and monitoring over time.
Clinical approach
Eye-preserving procedures constitute a major part of the department’s treatment activity. Available approaches combine surgical techniques with local drug delivery, laser treatment, or thermal treatment. Fundus cameras and RetCam imaging are used for examination and ongoing observation.
What patients can expect
Assessment may include imaging of the back of the eye. Depending on the tumour, treatment may involve surgery, chemotherapy delivered into the eye or selectively into an artery, or laser or thermal treatment. Reconstructive surgery is also available. Follow-up assessment may use repeat imaging to monitor changes.
