The Neuro-oncology Department provides specialist diagnosis and surgical treatment for tumours of the brain, spinal cord, skull base, spinal canal, and spine.
What the department does
The department performs microsurgical removal of primary and metastatic brain tumours, skull-base surgery, and removal of intradural and extradural spinal tumours. Other procedures include spinal decompression and stabilisation, endoscopic removal of pituitary tumours through the nose, and minimally invasive neurosurgery.

The department treats primary and metastatic brain tumours, complex skull-base and posterior fossa tumours, pituitary tumours, and tumours affecting the spinal cord and vertebral column. Its spinal surgery services include tumour removal, decompression, and stabilisation.
Clinical approach
Surgical techniques use operating microscopes, neuroendoscopy, and neuronavigation. MRI and CT data support three-dimensional surgical planning. Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring allows nervous system function to be monitored during surgery. Minimally invasive and combined surgical approaches are available.
What patients can expect
Assessment and surgical planning may involve MRI and CT imaging. Depending on the tumour, treatment may involve microsurgery, an endoscopic procedure, or spinal decompression and stabilisation. Some pituitary tumours can be removed through the nose. During selected operations, the team monitors nervous system function in real time.
