What the department does

The department performs extended and combined gastrectomy, distal subtotal and proximal gastric resection, and Garlock surgery involving the gastric cardia and oesophagus. Other operations include splenectomy and removal of abdominal and retroperitoneal tumours. Laparoscopic and endoscopic surgical techniques are also used.

Conditions and clinical questions addressed

The department treats gastric cancer and tumours affecting the spleen, abdominal cavity, and retroperitoneal space. A particular focus is locally advanced gastric cancer, including cases in which treatment before surgery may make tumour removal possible.

Clinical approach

Treatment includes surgery and, within a grant-funded programme, neoadjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced gastric cancer. The department develops and introduces prolonged regional and selective endovascular chemotherapy methods. Organ-preserving operations form part of its surgical practice.

What patients can expect

Patients have access to diagnostic assessment and open or minimally invasive surgical treatment. For selected patients with locally advanced gastric cancer, chemotherapy may precede surgery with the aim of enabling tumour removal. Surgical options range from partial stomach resection to more extensive operations.
